Golden, buttery skull-shaped buns filled with juicy cheeseburgers, perfect for a spooky Halloween dinner.

  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

Skull-Shaped Hamburger Buns

5 tablespoons (56 g) salted butter, softened

3 ½ cups (420 g) all-purpose flour

1 large egg

¼ cup (50 g) granulated sugar

1 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon (9 g) instant yeast

¾ cup (170 g) lukewarm water, 100–110°F

Skull-Shaped Cheeseburgers

32 ounces 80/20 ground beef

Salt and pepper

1 tablespoon butter, lard, or vegetable oil

8 slices cheese (American, Cheddar, Provolone, Havarti)

Burger toppings: lettuce, tomato, ketchup, mustard, mayo, onions, pickles

Instructions

1. Grease 8 skull cavities in Nordic Ware pans with 1 tablespoon butter. In a mixing bowl, combine remaining butter (cut into pieces) with flour, egg, sugar, salt, and yeast. Add lukewarm water and mix until well blended. Knead for 5–7 minutes until dough springs back when poked. Cover and let rise 1–2 hours until doubled.

2. Deflate dough and divide into 8 equal pieces (about 95 g each). Press into greased skull cavities. Cover and let rise for another hour. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).

3. Bake for 14–18 minutes, rotating halfway through. Transfer to a cooling rack and brush with melted butter.

4. Season ground beef with salt and pepper. Shape into patties sized for buns. Heat butter or oil in skillet over medium-high heat, cook patties until browned, top with cheese to melt.

5. Slice cooled buns, fill with patties, and add desired toppings. Serve immediately.

Notes

You can prepare the buns a day ahead. Store in an airtight container and reheat before serving.

Swap cheese types for different flavors — Havarti, Pepper Jack, or Smoked Gouda work well.

Serve with themed Halloween drinks like Eyeball Jello Shots for a complete party spread.
