An easy-to-make Traditional Irish Soda Bread that bakes quickly and offers comforting flavors, perfect for busy days.

Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 450°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, add the flour, salt, and baking soda. Whisk to combine.
  3. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients.
  4. Add the buttermilk to the dry ingredients in the well.
  5. Gently stir the ingredients together with a wooden spoon, starting from the center.
  6. Lightly flour a work surface and pour the dough out onto it.
  7. Knead the dough gently about 4 times until it comes together.
  8. Shape it into a round loaf and transfer it to the prepared baking sheet.
  9. Lightly sprinkle the top with flour, and slash a large X on top with a sharp knife.
  10. Bake for 15 minutes at 450°F, then lower the temperature to 400°F and bake for another 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
  11. Allow to cool for at least 20 minutes before serving warm.

Notes

Customize by adding raisins or caraway seeds. Substitute buttermilk with milk mixed with vinegar or lemon juice.
